In this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Chuck Nice interview Sean Carroll about his latest paper exploring what Hawking radiation looks like if you fall into a black hole. Sean explains the apparent paradox: from far away, black holes emit Hawking radiation, but if you cross the event horizon, you’re not supposed to notice anything unusual. Their research shows that intense radiation does exist at the horizon—but because you’re falling so fast, quantum effects prevent you from observing it. The main idea: black holes are consistent with known physics, but your experience of them depends dramatically on your frame of reference.
