Since Reagan, presidents have started saluting like they’re in the chain of command, even though the Constitution’s commander in chief is still a civilian – separate from the uniformed ranks. That blurs the bright line the founders were obsessed with: civilian control of the military so you don’t end up with a strongman backed by a standing army.
When Trump and Vance stand in civilian clothes using a military salute at a somber, supposedly apolitical ritual, they’re turning sacred military space into a stage for their leader cult and authoritarian cosplay. Civilian etiquette is hand over heart – the salute is a military gesture Trump and Vance have NO RIGHT TO HIJACK for their authoritarian cosplay!
