Mitch McConnell is openly working to stall President Trump’s SAVE Act, and many in his own party say it’s all about revenge, spite, and old grudges—not what is best for America or our elections.
The SAVE Act is Trump’s signature election integrity bill aimed at tightening voter ID and proof-of-citizenship rules nationwide, something GOP voters overwhelmingly support. The House has already done its job and passed the bill, and Republican support in the Senate is there if it’s given a real vote. But here’s the problem: McConnell is using his power to keep the bill bottled up in committee, blocking it from even coming to the floor for an up-or-down vote.
Republicans like Tim Burchett are calling this out directly, saying McConnell is acting out of “meanness” because he doesn’t like Trump and questioning whether it’s even McConnell or his staff really in charge anymore. Other conservatives say this goes back to January 6 and years of personal animosity, with McConnell determined to “smother” one of Trump’s top priorities on his way out the door. Instead of uniting the party around securing elections, McConnell is handing Democrats a gift by blocking a bill they absolutely hate, even as they smear it as some kind of “voter suppression.”
Now layer this over what we just saw with the Schumer shutdown. That shutdown cost the U.S. economy billions, hurt small businesses, delayed paychecks for law enforcement and government workers, and disrupted everyday life for millions of Americans. It hurt the country and President Trump politically, but Democrats didn’t seem to care about the economic victims as long as they could damage Trump and gain leverage.
The real fear now is that this becomes the permanent Democrat playbook: block election security, threaten or trigger shutdowns, tank the economy, and then blame Trump to claw back power. Republicans like McConnell who refuse to fight for the SAVE Act are making that strategy easier to use against Trump and against the American people.
