Nawaz Sharif is the three times Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was initially promoted by the military establishment. His father was the industrialist and owned the Itefaq group and Sharif Group. Sharif family is one of the wealthiest families of Pakistan. He studied at Government College University (GCU) and University of Punjab. In 1981 he became the finance minister. In 1985 he became the Chief Minister of Punjab province. During 1988 elections he contested from Islami Jamhori Etihad (IJI) but his party failed to win the elections. The opposition party Pakistan People Party (PPP) won the elections and he became Chief Minister of Punjab. During the 1997 elections, he was again selected as the country’s prime minister. During a coup in 1999, his government was dismissed by the army chief Pervez Musharraf. During 2013 general elections he again became the prime minister for the third time. In 2018 supreme court of Pakistan disqualified him to keep any public office.

During his second term, he was more successful than the previous one. He got an absolute majority in the parliament and was the only politician who was enjoying good relations with the military establishment. During his second term, he said that Pakistan will sign the CNTBT if India signs it. In 1998 when India conducted its nuclear tests, Pakistan came under pressure domestically. In response, Nawaz Sharif authorized nuclear tests. On 28 May Pakistan conducted its five tests and the 6th test was conducted on 30 May 1998. After these tests, the Nawaz Sharif became famous in the country but the international pressure was severe. There were United Nations sanction and economic embargo on Pakistan from the outside world. The annual growth rated in his second term was low as compared to its previous tenure. It was almost 3% compared to 6% in his first term. After the nuclear tests, Indian prime minister Attal Bihari Vajpayee visited Pakistan and initiated the Delhi-Lahore bus. Due to his absolute majority, Sharif was able to pass the 13th and 14th Amendments to the constitution. These amendments restricted the powers of the president and made party leaders as dictators. Things were in control till the Kargil war. Due to some differences, Sharif appointed General Ziauddin Butt as the army chief in the absence of Pervez Musharraf who was at a state visit to Sri Lanka. After coming to the country, Musharraf applied martial law and ousted Sharif from power. Due to Saudi intervention, he was exiled to Saudi Arabia for almost a decade. He returned into politics in 2008 and his party formed a coalition government with PPP.
