Bryan Kohberger, a former Washington State University criminology PhD candidate, pleaded guilty on July 2, 2025, to the murders of four University of Idaho students—Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—after prosecutors struck a last‑minute plea deal just weeks before his trial was set to begin in August 2025. The agreement, designed to spare him the death penalty, calls for four consecutive life sentences and an additional 10 years for burglary, with Kohberger waiving most appeal rights. Though some victim families welcomed the swift resolution, others criticized the deal—claiming they weren’t consulted. Many were surprised at the sudden plea deal and disheartened to find no resolution while the motive remains unclear.
