The new Chief of MI6 warns that the prospect of war returning to Europe with Putin's Russia, a huge $105bn EU loan for Ukraine, a race to tap frozen Russian assets, and a new $11bn US weapons package for Taiwan are at the center of tonight’s episode of Cold War 2.0 with historian Dr. Tarik Cyril Amar.

We start in London, where the new MI6 chief and a chorus of security voices warn that the UK now sits “between peace and war” and faces an “acute, adaptive and accelerating” Russian threat. At the same time, a Telegraph piece argues that “getting Britain ready for war is the only hope of peace, and it’s a job for us all.” What does this mobilization rhetoric really mean for ordinary British people – and is it about defence, or preparing public opinion for a long confrontation with Moscow?

Then we move to Brussels, where EU leaders just agreed a €90 billion ($105bn) interest-free loan for Ukraine, funded by EU borrowing instead of directly using frozen Russian state assets. At the same time, a parallel debate continues over whether to tap €200+ billion in immobilized Russian assets as collateral for future “reparations loans”, with Belgium and others warning of legal and financial blowback.

We look at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s warning that, without access to Russian assets, Ukraine faces a “dire” battlefield situation, would have to cut back drone production and lose leverage in negotiations with Washington. Meanwhile, EU and NATO leaders talk openly of “money today or blood tomorrow,” framing the loan and asset debate as a decision about whether war spreads to the rest of Europe.

Finally, we jump to East Asia, where the US State Department has approved more than $11bn in potential weapons sales to Taiwan, including rocket systems, howitzers and drones, triggering strong protests from Beijing, which says the move violates the “one China” principle and undermines regional stability. How does this tie into the wider picture of a multi-front confrontation: Russia in Europe, China in the Indo-Pacific, and a West that seems to be re-arming across the board?

🧠 In this episode we discuss:

• “Getting Britain ready for war” and MI6’s warning about Russia

• The EU’s $105bn loan to Ukraine and the battle over frozen Russian assets

• Zelensky’s threats of a “dire battlefield” if Europe does not unlock Russian money

• A divided EU racing to use Russian funds before Washington and Moscow make their own deal

• The $11bn US arms package for Taiwan and China’s reaction

• How all of this fits into a single, accelerating Cold War 2.0
