Why did CIA Director John Ratcliffe suddenly fly to Moscow for eight hours, and what was really discussed behind closed doors?

In Cold War 2.0 #83, historian Tarik Cyril Amar joins Kevork Almassian to examine the competing explanations surrounding the CIA director’s extraordinary Moscow visit.

Western media reports claim Ratcliffe carried a warning for Russia not to attack NATO. Another narrative says Washington wanted to confront Moscow with its assessment of the Ukraine war. Tarik argues that none of these explanations has yet been established by hard evidence—and suspects the real agenda may have involved Iran, China, or something else entirely.

We then examine Benjamin Netanyahu’s remarkable message to Volodymyr Zelensky describing Iran as a “common threat” to Israel and Ukraine. Tarik argues that the letter also reveals something else: the deterioration of the once carefully balanced relationship between Russia and Israel.

The conversation then moves into a wider question: can people on the European left coherently support both Ukraine and Palestine? Tarik challenges attempts to treat the two wars as morally and geopolitically equivalent and argues that sovereignty—not externally imposed political systems—should be the foundation of international relations.

Then the economic consequences arrive.

Russia and Ukraine are attacking infrastructure connected to each other’s agricultural exports while wheat prices rise and Black Sea shipments fall. Tarik warns that disruptions involving two countries that account for roughly a quarter of global grain exports could lead to higher inflation in wealthy countries—and potentially to food scarcity or famine in vulnerable parts of the Global South.

The Iran war, fuel costs, drought and extreme weather are compounding the pressure. Tarik argues that military, political and economic crises are increasingly converging into one larger global crisis.

Finally, US corporate profits have reached record levels while workers receive a historically low share of national income. Tarik calls what is happening in America “class war from above” and asks how long the political system can absorb the pressure before something breaks.
