YouTube Description
as posted by the channelIn early August 2025, over 50 Texas House Democrats fled the state to block a Republican-led redistricting plan backed by President Donald Trump, which aimed to create five new GOP-leaning congressional seats. By leaving, they denied the Texas House тысяSystem: House the quorum needed to vote on the map. Most went to Illinois, with others heading to New York and Massachusetts. Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened to arrest the lawmakers and remove them from office, citing a non-binding 2021 legal opinion. Abbott also ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Rangers to pursue them, though the warrants lack power outside state lines. He further claimed that fundraising to cover $500 daily fines for breaking quorum could constitute felony bribery, a charge legal experts say is difficult to prove. The Democrats, hosted by Democratic governors like Illinois' JB Pritzker, vowed to stay away until the 30-day special session expires, aiming to delay the redistricting vote. This tactic, known as breaking quorum, has been used before, notably in 2003 and 2021, with mixed success—previous efforts delayed but did not ultimately stop Republican legislation. The Texas House voted to issue civil arrest warrants, but these are largely symbolic as the lawmakers are out of state.
