The two begin with the obligatory bar-bet discussion of whether Mays was the best baseball player of all time, as a wide spectrum of opinion from writers and players attests. The two round out the discussion of Mays as a player with an account to his intangibles – his field intelligence, his charisma, and his great joy for the game. They then go to Mays, the man that Bleich knew so well. They discuss his reticence to enter the fray of the white-hot racial/sports politics of the 1960s, and the criticism it drew from other pioneers. They talk about Mays’s at first somewhat difficult transition after he retired as a player, and the important work and projects he came to take on up to his death at age 93. Finally, Litman asks Bleich to close the conversation with a detail or two that people don’t generally know about the Say-Hey kid.
