On Friday, July 19th, Harry spoke with Norm Ornstein, a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and one of the country’s foremost experts on Congress and the political process. Ornstein argues in an editorial op-ed in the LA Times that a so-called “open” convention, in which various aspirants vie for the Democratic nomination for president, while perhaps intoxicating to political junkies, would be a disaster that would nearly guarantee a loss to Donald Trump in the fall. Ornstein cites recent and not-so-recent historical precedents, all of which suggest the harsh political cost to a party that chooses its candidate in an open process. The two discuss alternatives for choosing a replacement for Joseph Biden — neither is perfect, but neither has what Ornstein sees as the catastrophic effects of an open convention.

TALKING FEDS PODCAST is a roundtable discussion that brings together prominent former government officials, journalists, and special guests for a dynamic and in-depth analysis of the most pressing questions in law and politics.
