6:53Now PlayingApril 2, 2025 - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL)—a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation (CST) and Ranking Member of the CST Aviation Subcommittee—repeatedly pressed Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg on whether he would commit to not seek nor accept delegation of airworthiness inspection authority—an authority that would allow the company to self-inspect its own aircraft—from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Again and again, Mr. Ortberg dodged the question and refused to openly commit. During her questioning, Duckworth highlighted how inappropriate it would be for Boeing to accept this delegation as the FAA continues working to implement all 16 of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Inspector General’s recommendations after they found in an October report that FAA’s oversight of Boeing production was not effective. In fact, when the FAA has previously allowed Boeing to self-inspect their aircraft to ensure they conformed to their FAA-approved type design, Boeing had repeatedly abused this authority and knowingly produced 737 MAX aircraft in violation of the plane’s approved type design that would put the safety of the flying public at risk.
