Kendi challenges the comforting myth that racism is simply a matter of individual hatred or personal intent. In these opening chapters, we examine the difference between being “not racist” and actively anti-racist; the power of definitions; and why racist ideas so often serve racist policies—not the other way around.
This discussion gets to the heart of a question too many people avoid: What does it actually mean to oppose racism in our daily lives, our politics, and our institutions? Anti-racism is not a label to wear. It is a commitment to identify injustice, confront it honestly, and fight for policies that create equity and human dignity.
