It was Prussian General Carl Von Clausewitz who said “War is politics by other means” a quip that relates directly to peace negotiations because the conditions on the ground for your average infantryman end up shaping the conditions in the negotiation rooms. I recognize this is an incredibly sensitive topic with opinions ranging from Ukraine should fight until they’ve expelled all Russian forces and recaptured Crimea which is rightfully there’s to the two countries should negotiate for peace right now at their existing front lines to prevent escalating into a larger conflict.
But it gets complicated because if Ukraine were to settle for that it wouldn’t even necessarily guarantee an end to the war in the future. Today we will try to understand what the current peace plans are, how negotiations are influenced by the military conditions on the ground, the historical trends of peace treaties, and who are the major players behind them in Ukraine.
