Today, the United States has one of the most capable special operations forces in the world, but it wasn't always this way.

In 1980, a joint operation dubbed "Eagle Claw" was launched in the deserts of Iran that was supposed to bring home 53 American hostages held at the US Embassy in Tehran. Months of meticulous planning went into it, with Delta Force, Rangers, Marines, and airmen taking part.

Despite all the planning, prep work, and elite units taking part, it was nothing short of a failure that resulted in the deaths of 8 servicemembers and no hostages rescued. Out of that failure, though, the Pentagon and lawmakers would reform special operations using lessons learned and create the framework that has led to countless successful missions.
