The Navy has finally picked a new landing ship for the Marines – and it’s not some sci-fi stealth design or gold-plated cruiser. It’s a simple 100-meter long beaching ship based on the Dutch-designed LST-100, and it’s supposed to be the workhorse that moves Marine Littoral Regiments around the Pacific in a fight with China. In this video, we break down why the Corps has been yelling about amphibious ships for years, what the new McClung-Class Medium Landing Ship (LSM) actually is, and whether this “simple” design can really fix the Navy’s amphibious problem.
We’ll look at how Force Design 2030 and Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO) created demand for a smaller landing ship, why the original Light Amphibious Warship plan collapsed as “unaffordable,” and how the Navy ended up buying the design data for the Damen LST-100. Then we get into what this ship can carry, how Marines plan to use it around places like Taiwan and the South China Sea, and whether the Navy can avoid turning another ship program into an LCS- or Constellation-style mess.
