If you care at all about protecting LGBTQ youth or free speech and free expression on the internet, there's a really shocking piece of legislation in congress right now that you need to know about.
It's called the Kids Online Safety Act, KOSA for short, but don't let the name fool you, according to every expert on LGBTQ rights, free speech, and many who actually work in child safety, this law would do the opposite of protecting kids.
Today, the CEOs of Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, and X were hauled in front of congress by the supporters of the act.
Sen Lindsey Graham claimed TikTok is “being used to basically destroy Israel." Sen. Tom Cotton kept repeatedly asking TikTok's Singaporean CEO if he was Chinese. And this was all following earlier comments by Sen. Marsha Blackburn, where she claims KOSA would help "protect minor children from the transgender in this culture." She also claimed that social media "is where children are being indoctrinated" seemingly into LGBTQ culture
Though lawmakers claim KOSA is about "protecting kids" experts say it would actually endanger and isolate them. The bill would cut kids off from crucial information online about basically any controversial topics like abortion, gender affirming care, substance abuse, and even current events.
It could require that anyone using a social media platform provide their government ID. Which has terrifying implications for free speech.
Evan Greer, director of Fight for the Future, a human rights advocacy group said: “People have been using the idea of protecting children as the justification for authoritarian policies that actually hurt children for decades. KOSA is not a privacy bill, it’s a censorship bill.”
More than 100 human rights and LGBTQ groups have condemned the bill, saying it would endanger minors, especially LGBTQ youth. First amendment lawyers and organizations focused on protecting free speech also have lambasted the proposal. KOSA could result in the collection of more sensitive data on both children and adults
