From Homelessness to Public Leadership | Shameka Parrish-Wright

While in Washington, DC, I had the opportunity to catch up with Louisville Metro Councilwoman Shameka Parrish-Wright, Executive Director of VOCAL-KY and a candidate for mayor of Louisville.

In this conversation, we discuss why it is important for political leaders to speak up on behalf of people experiencing homelessness and why silence can create even greater barriers for those already struggling to access housing, stability, and support.

Shameka also shares how her own experiences with poverty and homelessness have shaped her understanding of public policy, advocacy, and leadership. As someone who has lived through many of the challenges she now works to address, she offers a unique perspective on why representation matters and why directly impacted voices belong in positions of leadership. Together, we discuss housing, dignity, political responsibility, and the consequences of failing to support our unhoused neighbors through meaningful public policy.

This conversation is a reminder that homelessness is not simply a housing issue. It is also a leadership issue. The question is whether those in positions of power are willing to listen, show up, and act.
