0:59Now PlayingLet’s revisit 3 relationship dynamics:
1. Codependency = when someone expects the other person to soothe them 24/7 because they don’t know how to do this for themselves.
2. Counterdependency = when someone fears having anyone rely on them at all (the opposite of codependency).
3. Interdependency = when someone can both meet their own needs and rely on someone to meet their needs when needed.
The first two are what we would call unhealthy relationship dynamics, while interdependency is what we should all ideally strive for.
While it’s perfectly normal to turn to others to meet our needs (e.g. reassurance), we must also learn how to meet our needs ourselves if we want to build healthy relationships that last and that are free from resentment.
