For many Fearful Avoidants, independence can feel like a strength; a badge of resilience. But there’s an important difference between true independence and hyper-independence rooted in fear. Real independence still allows room for connection, support, and asking for help when it’s needed.

When independence is driven by a fear of being a burden, being let down, or feeling helpless, closeness can trigger guilt, anxiety, or shutdown instead of safety. That response didn’t come from nowhere, it was learned as protection. And the powerful part? What was learned can be gently unlearned. Awareness is the first step toward creating relationships that feel both safe and supportive.
