This deeper understanding of joy ties into what saints like St. Thomas Aquinas have taught. Aquinas wrote that joy is delight in the good; ultimately, God is the highest good.
He also said, "Man cannot live without joy. That is why one deprived of spiritual joys goes over to carnal pleasures." This spoke to me so deeply because it made me realize that when we lack joy, we start seeking satisfaction in all the wrong places. We try to fill the void with things that don't truly satisfy. But when our hearts are set on God, joy becomes a natural outflow of that relationship.
