I often caution that when the police believe they have the authority to stop your car, detain you, enter your home, whatever, the pragmatic response is to assert your rights and objections, and then likely watch them do what they were going to do anyway. The enforcement of your rights is best done not on the side of the road or standing in your doorway facing a bunch of armed cops, but in a courtroom with a lawyer.

And a frequent response I’ll get is, heck no, I know my rights, I’ve got my guns, those cops will come into my house over my dead body, I’ll fight them off!

Now, I don’t tell people what to do, I only try to help people make informed decisions likely to lead to positive outcomes—so let’s let’s talk about the practical realities of all this.
