Yesterday the Supreme Court heard oral argument on the question of whether states were legally permitted to count as valid ballot that they received only AFTER election day. Roughly 29 states currently have laws allowing for the counting of late ballots, sometimes for weeks after election day (looking at you, California).
This extending counting of late ballots is, of course, perhaps the most fertile ground available for electoral cheating—see how short your candidate falls on election day, and then just keep counting “new” ballots until your candidate has caught up and won.
In this case of Watson v. RNC, a Mississippi law allowing for ballots to be counted even if up to 5 days late has been challenged as violative of federal statutes calling for a single election day. If the Mississippi law is ruled against all “late ballot” statutes everywhere will also fall.
