What “Defending America” REALLY Means!

If you’re a member of this Branca Show community, you’d have only one answer to the question, “Should we defend America”? And that answer would, of course, be “absolutely yes.”

But the actual strength of that defense is largely a function of our clarity of understanding of what America actually is. Is it merely a landmass, the portion of the North American continent squeezed between Mexico and Canada? Is it an economic opportunity zone that should welcome the supposed “best and brightest” from around the world with the mission of maximizing the generic economic measure of Gross Domestic Product? Is it a place of safe refuge open to all troubled peoples of the world?

Or, more extremely, is it a font of Fascist colonial racism that must be crushed at all costs? If that sounds extreme, be aware that there are many of millions of people living right now within our national borders who hold that view—many of them actual or at least purported American citizens. Which, of course, raises the question—is any society obliged to maintain within it persons intent on its destruction?

I suggest that you can’t effectively defend what you can’t identify, and you can’t identify what you can’t articulate—so let’s take a step back from the day’s headlines and consider that broader question of what “defending America” really means.
