In today's show, I look at the story of a Texas data-science graduate who finished with honors and, nine months later, is still working the same job he had during college. I explain why I believe programs like OPT, H-1B, and H-4 distort the labor market against American workers, how temporary work visas have evolved into something much more permanent, and why the incentives surrounding these programs deserve far more scrutiny.
There is some good news. The Trump administration has revoked 175,000 visas, the Department of Labor is increasing scrutiny of abusive H-1B employers, additional restrictions are reportedly coming, and DHS is moving against the 60-day grace period that allows laid-off H-1B workers to search for another American job. I support those moves. I just don't think they go nearly far enough. American immigration policy should serve the interests of American citizens first.
