It’s hard to know how common this choice may be—but some data indicate that parents choosing to parent with their best pals may be more common than people think. The decision, however, takes a fair amount of logistics: There’s finding adjacent homes, navigating different budgets, and balancing other family obligations that might keep parents from moving away from other relatives.
But in reporting this story, “I saw how the architecture of family life changed for parents when they had friends by their side,” Cohen writes. And despite any challenges, “every parent I spoke with said they had gained much-needed support and, in most cases, deeper friendships.”
