So, private security. Or your own personal police force. It’s a great idea, because calling the actual police has gone really well for everyone historically so adding another tier of police makes total sense. #DrippingIrony.
Citizen recently offered a $30,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of an LA-area man they believed to be guilty of arson. Broadcasters on the app asked people to “hunt [the] guy down.” The real police detained the guy but let him go because there was no evidence that they should hold him. The real police love detaining and imprisoning people, so you best believe that Citizen was way out of line.
People have accused Citizen of promoting vigilante justice, and this seems to be correct. Huge cash rewards for information about people that no one has any evidence against? Great. It’s only a matter of time before someone feels compelled to detain someone by shooting them. Or shooting someone who sort of looks like them. Or someone who looks nothing like them, let’s be honest, there are just so many things that could go wrong.
Francesca, Robert, and Christina all agree that Citizen is a ridiculous mess that tech bros should really be held to account for. What kind of deranged person would think that an app that offers a feed of real-time “crime” in your neighborhood would be best accompanied by an actual private security offering???
Francesca, Robert, and Christina also have questions about what these private security forces are and are not allowed to do. Do they have guns? Can they chase you down and put you in zip ties or something while they call the real police? WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE??? Are they like mall cops? Or are they more like a Coast Guard–type level of authority? We just don’t know, but it all seems like a recipe for disaster.
