Why is the media hammering Joe Biden so badly over the withdrawal from Afghanistan? If things had gone slightly more smoothly during the withdrawal, would the level of criticism be the same? Could they have even gone smoothly given how terribly rocky the 20-year war was? The Bitchuation Room is joined by Max Elbaum, noted anti-war activist and author of Revolution in the Air: Sixties Radicals Turn to Lenin, Mao and Che, to help us answer these questions and more.
Aftering covering the occupation of Afghanistan for a grand total of 5 minutes for the entire year prior to August, suddenly every heartbreaking story from the ground and every critical national security state psycho is suddenly getting a primetime spotlight on every major network. They’ll cover their butts by saying that “they agree with withdrawing, but not like this” or some other such garbage, but let’s be real: these are the same people who rabidly supported Bush’s wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They don’t believe we should leave, they believe we should stay in Afghanistan for another 100 years.
Yesterday, in a nationally televised speech, Joe Biden spoke in front of the media to confirm that the United States will be fully withdrawing all U.S. troops, civilians, and aligned Afghans, by the August 31st deadline that was set by Biden and reaffirmed by the Taliban. Whether this is how it all ends or not remains to be seen, but the end of the tunnel that is the occupation of Afghanistan is finally in focus and in sight.
The Bitchuation Room is grateful to have been joined by Max Elbaum, a longstanding member of the fight against American imperialism. Max has been involved in anti-war, anti-racist and radical movements since joining Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in Wisconsin in the 1960s. He was a founder of the War Times/Tiempo de Guerras bilingual tabloid project in the months after 9/11 and is currently an editor of Organizing Upgrade. He is the author of Revolution in the Air: Sixties Radicals Turn to Lenin, Mao and Che, re-released by Verso Books in 2018 with a new Foreword by Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza.
