YouTube Description
as posted by the channelWhy are “comedians” like Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld so successful, despite being painfully unfunny? Professor Dannagal Young, a professor of Communication and Political Science at the University of Delaware joined us to discuss this question and more.
Gutfeld is essentially doing the same show as Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity, the only difference being that Gutfeld tries to make jokes and then laughs at what he just said. Beyond that, his irony-poisoned diatribes make it impossible to actually tell what he believes and what the joke is. Don’t worry though, your boomer grandparents who can’t remember how to change the channel away from Fox News definitely understand where the jokes begin and end.
Another key thing is that Gutfeld doesn’t have much capacity for empathy, which apparently conservatives are into. It’s pretty easy to make mean and cruel jokes at other people’s expense when you don’t think they’re real people. Of course we can all be less than empathetic at one time or another, but lacking empathy certainly isn’t a key foundational belief for many on the left.
