Why do Republicans feed off of a false sense of victimization? If liberals, or even the left, are mad about something, that’s all the validation that conservatives need to feel like they're on the right track.

Republicans love to define themselves in opposition to others, and care very little about policies that materially impact anyone except the most wealthy. Usually this is the first step of your young adult identity formation, but it seems like most Republicans never got past what they’re against, as opposed to what they believe in. Anti-abortion sentiments are rooted in white supremacy and misogyny. Lower taxes are rooted in a fundamental distrust of government to act as a balancing force against the power of capital. Anti-immigration sentiments are rooted in a hatred and fear of others.

According to some research, conservatives are much more interested in liberals at monitoring for threats. Not in the sense that they want to mitigate those threats or even do anything to solve it, they’re monitoring so that they can run towards the threat and then confront it directly.
