Want to Grow the Economy? Support Moms

Have you heard about how Biden’s social infrastructure plan will help families? From paid leave to universal pre-k to extended child tax credits? That is, if it passes.

When we talk about social programs, America’s corporate media entities seem to overly fixate on dollar amounts. When we think about Joe Biden’s 3.5 trillion dollar spending proposals, we don’t think about it as investing in discrete programs that will see private wealth and capital created out of those public dollars. This same standard is not applied to the logic of tax cuts, or projects of American empire (like military spending), yet it’s all too common to see in reporting on social welfare spending.

It’s also difficult to account for private wealth and capital that won’t be lost because of this government spending. For example, if you don’t invest money in addressing the climate, the long term damage to the economy is impossible to calculate, however the money you spend to mitigate that is easily calculated. The same is true for an issue like maternity leave. We can never account for the lost potential of women who are permanently removed from their careers due to pregnancy discriminiation, ageism, sexism, the list goes on and on.
