Imagining Los Angeles Without Political Corruption and With Housing

Just how corrupt is Los Angeles? Let’s go through a few quick examples of how bad it is on the City Council. There’s a former council member serving a federal prison sentence for receiving bribes, another who gave city contracts to vendors who helped his son get into USC, other one who got their son a job at the city’s municipal water district even though he had no experience… The list of corruption, large and small, could continue here until I hit the word count.

What is there to be done about this? According to organizers and candidates for city council Hugo Soto Martinez and Eunisses Hernandez, it starts with putting people who are working against corrupt interests in positions of power like city council.

Eunisses Hernandez has lived in Highland Park her entire life, fighting to keep her family home on the front lines of gentrification. Professionally, Eunisses was a key member of the Drug Policy Alliance, and led the charge to shut down one of the most corrupt county jails in the country, diverting the money to community benefits. Most recently she cochaired Measure J, which successfully reallocated a billion dollars from carceral systems into programs that actually address the root causes of crime.
