If Mayor Daniel Wayne Lee became a Congressperson, how would he work to push the Democratic party left, even while the forces of bourgeois democracy are currently swinging right at breakneck speed? It’s a central question of our time for leftists in the Democratic party; how far left can I push this thing, and what are the hills the left should die on.
One year later, the biggest winners in the Biden agenda are centrists without any interest in democratic reform, fighting climate change, or tackling any of the actual existential threats our species, let alone our country, will face in the coming decades. There was modest stimulus spending early on, then bi-partisan infrastructure investments that, while historic, are nothing compared with the scope of the problem.
Thus far, some on the left have also been disappointed with the strategy and tactics of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the closest thing we have to an actual left wing party in the electoral arena. If Democrats somehow hold onto power, it will provide an unprecedented opportunity for leftists to bend the Democratic party away from its corporatist, centrist, neoliberal roots.
