Which is a more toxic and dangerous situation to be in as a woman in Border Patrol: a lone ranger stopping a small group of migrants, or to be at your workplace among your colleagues? For former Border Patrol Agent turned whistleblower and author Jenn Bidd, it was definitely the latter.
Border Patrol is a square peg for the round hole that is this: asylum seekers cross the southern border looking for safety and refuge. These migrants are currently being detained through the criminal justice system, when they really should be dealing with asylum officers and asylum policies. Problem is, the U.S. doesn’t have any.
Beyond the lack of capabilities and tools the Border Patrol has for this issue, is the toxic corrupt work environment that is Border Patrol. Systemic sexual abuse and unaccountable violence towards migrants give the agency a feeling of reckless unaccountability. For our guest, her tipping point to leave the agency came when she realized that she felt more unsafe around her own colleagues than she did in the field. And that was years after she herself was sexually assaulted.
Jenn Budd is a former Border Patrol Agent turned whistleblower, activist, and author. Her upcoming book Against The WallMy Journey From Border Patrol Agent to Immigrant Rights Activist, exposes the institutional corruption, misogyny and racism of the most corrupt federal agency in the United States. It will be out in June from Heliotrope Books. Follow her on Twitter
