How do Border Agents feel about enforcing immigration policies that make no sense for the migrants, or for our society, and seem entirely structured around cruelty? According to this week’s guest, and former Senior Border Patrol Jenn Budd, after a little while the cognitive dissonance of “surely things are this way for a reason” fades away, and all you're left with is the realities of the horror you’re helping perpetuate.
The theoretical reason that U.S. border policies are the way they are is to demonstrate to other potential migrants how terrible of an experience you would have if you did the same. If the news in South American countries is about all the death, violence, isolation, and deprivations that the Border Patrol subjects people to, then they’ll be less likely to migrate (or so the logic goes).
Of course, many of these migrants are fleeing unstable countries that the U.S. had a major hand in destabilizing. Honduras, Haiti, Venezuela, the list of Latin American countries that the U.S. has directly interfered in is exactly as long as the list of countries south of the U.S. border.
Jenn Budd is a former Border Patrol Agent turned whistleblower, activist, and author. Her upcoming book Against The WallMy Journey From Border Patrol Agent to Immigrant Rights Activist, exposes the institutional corruption, misogyny and racism of the most corrupt federal agency in the United States. It will be out in June from Heliotrope Books. Follow her on Twitter
