How did 9/11 change the situation on the border? According to our guest, Jenn Budd, a Senior Border Patrol agent until 2001, 9/11 made it a significantly less humane and reasonable place for human beings (which was pretty much 9/11’s effect on everything).
Before 9/11, the Department of Homeland Security didn’t exist, and neither did the conservative wet dream of terrorists crossing the southern border. Since 2003, the Border Patrol’s budget has increased significantly every year, regardless of whose administration was in power at the time. In 2003, the budget was $363 million. By 2021, it was $17.7 billion.
Joe Biden once said “don’t tell me what your values are, show me your budget and I’ll tell you what your values are.” Look no further than this, folks. While the U.S. loves to pull the “nation of immigrants” card, we all understand that demonizing immigrants and refugees is big business on the right, and appeasing the extreme right on immigration has been the policy of Democrats forever.
Jenn Budd is a former Border Patrol Agent turned whistleblower, activist, and author. Her upcoming book Against The WallMy Journey From Border Patrol Agent to Immigrant Rights Activist, exposes the institutional corruption, misogyny and racism of the most corrupt federal agency in the United States. It will be out in June from Heliotrope Books. Follow her on Twitter
