Why were these “Canadian Truckers” as successful as they were? In case you hadn’t been paying attention to the U.S.’s northern neighbor, a “convoy” of large semis have parked themselves at ports of entry and in front of Canada’s parliament, apparently harassing the normal people who happen to live around Canada’s seat of federal government.
These truckers were protesting COVID mandates in Canada, where rules around COVID are actually practiced and enforced (to varying extents). These truckers were mainly organized by conspiracists, white supremacists and other far right groups, with shady funding from primarily American backers. Beyond blocking the capitol, the truckers are also blocking multiple ports of entry into the United States, further fraying already haggard supply chains.
This convoy has largely been treated very well by the American press, who seem to view right wing protests as legitimate and done by good hearted people. Truckers are crying foul right now, after their big party is getting shut down by the cops, but they have largely been handled with kid gloves by Canadian police. Let’s just say that the Mounties aren’t quite as friendly when it comes to indigenous First Nations protests.
