How would Russia’s war in Ukraine be different if the world could boycott all of its oil? At the moment, too many still European nations depend on it. We spoke with Anatol Lieven before Russia invaded Ukraine. Here is some of his updated writing on the war
“Just as NATO is prepared to fight Russia physically to the very last Ukrainian, so the United States is prepared to fight Russia economically down to the very last German,” says our guest Anatol Lieven, a senior research fellow at the Quincy Institute. Europe is forced to act much more tepidly with Russia because of how dependent it is on Russian exports of food and oil.
The economic sanctions currently being discussed, and implemented, will likely push global inflation much higher, and also force Europeans back to using coal and Canadian tar sands oil for their energy needs. All of this is a disaster for the common working people of all countries throughout the world.
Anatol Lieven is senior research fellow on Russia and Europe at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Lieven is author of several books on Russia and its neighbors, his most recent book 'Climate Change and the Nation State' is out with Oxford University Press. Follow him on Twitter
