as posted by the channelIf your town spent 60% of its entire budget on police, would that make you feel safe? In most towns in America, that’s pretty much how the budget is distributed, and yet the amount of cases solved by these overly inflated police budgets are abysmal.
Instead of using billions of federal COVID relief money to pay for police overtime, imagine if we had invested that money in making our streets safer for pedestrians, or added new lights to make it safer to be around at night, or even invested in the health and wellbeing of our neighbors.
Instead of new and novel ideas about how to make a city safer and more liveable, politicians keep smashing the “spend more on police” button over and over. It’s politically safe, maybe even advantageous, but after 60 years of this exact policy repeated over and over, with not a ton to show for it (besides the largest prison population of any country in the world) maybe its time to try other stuff.
