YouTube Description
as posted by the channelIs the nation with the world’s largest prison population making its communities safer for the people who live there? In a word: no.
The United States’ system of incarceration overwhelmingly targets people who already face almost insurmountable institutional, environmental, and geographic discriminiation. Almost 60 years after the beginning of the so-called “War on Drugs,” we’re still using these broken systems that got hundreds of thousands locked up, ripped communities apart, but didn’t actually make the country safer.
Despite decades of evidence that these carceral-first policies fail the people jailed, as well as the communities they’re ripped away from, politicians of all political stripes continue to beat the same drum of “just throw them all in jail” that got us here. Relying on prisons is a perfect catch all when bad policies on housing, or jobs or education fail. To say nothing of the ways the prison industrial complex is a form of legalized bribery between the hedge funds and billionaires who own for-profit prisons, and the politicians who make the rules.
