Why China is Not Like Russia

Are Xi Jinping and Vladmir Putin besties? Frenemies? Both?

China is straddling the line between strengthening their relationship with Russia against the West, while maintaining a strategic position as an international player. But as Russia continues its invasion and war-making in Ukraine, China’s relationship with the rest of the world only grows more strained, as they try to avoid being pulled into conflict.

Meanwhile, in U.S. should we be worried about potential war with Russia or a possible war with China? Are there parallels to be drawn between Ukraine and Taiwan?

Here’s the truth, they aren’t the same. Why? Because the Chinese leadership hasn’t gone entirely off the rails. Understandably, China wants to avoid the harsh, economically devastating sanctions the U.S. and the world have imposed on Russia and retain their position as a major part of the global economy. Meanwhile, the U.S. will continue amassing its military throughout the Indo-Pacific region, with Biden only ramping it up, creating a new new Pentagon-run China task force.
