Earlier this month, Lizelle Herrera was arrested and charged with murder in Texas, where her bail was set at half a million dollars. After confiding in her healthcare provider that she attempted to terminate a pregnancy, that provider turned around and called the police who subsequently charged her with murder by the police.
Herrera’s bail was set at half a million dollars, the charges against her were quickly dropped by the local district attorney and she was set free. Hererra’s case comes as abortion rights rights all across the country are under tremendous assault by well funded anti-choice groups, and a newly empowered conservative Supreme Court.
The Texas constitution states that a women cannot be charged with murder for terminating a pregancy. However, in recent years Texas passed an extremely harsh anti-abortion bill that includes civil charges, not criminal ones.
