as posted by the channelHas your city implemented any kind of public safety programs that take responsibilities off the police department’s plate? In some communities around the country, a new model of public safety is being pioneered.
Instead of sending someone with a license to kill to the scene of a mental health crises, domestic violence incident, or a number of other scenarios that require intervention, communities have begun to develop special response units that are tailored towards the issue they’re sent to resolve. Police are a blunt instrument, and if all you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail.
Abolishing the current system of policing in this country is a moral imperative, but we have a lot more organizing to do before we’re in a position to advance that. In the meantime, cities and communities can begin to transition away from the current systems by building separate avenues for resolving disputes that exist outside the criminal justice system.
