Why Social Justice Programs Are GOOD for Police

Shouldn’t police support rent control, environmental protections, and gun laws? It seems like an absurd question, but when we think about the outcomes that policies such as those produce, they serve to create a more holistic and healthy environment for our communities to flourish. When communities flourish, there’s less work for police, and what’s left is far less existentially dire.

You’d think that serving as the iron glove of capitalism would be grating on the soul and spirit of people who do this work, and yet there’s no support from the police for the policies that would drastically alter the material conditions of their communities. There’s a reason that many leftists like to call police “class traitors.”

Unfortunately, it’s not just the police who are wedded to this broken system. Our politicians, at every level, are also on board with the current system. Even milquetoast reforms, like The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act have zero chance of breaking through. The change we need will come through independent political organizing, outside the big tent of the Democratic party.
