as posted by the channelFox News continues to trot out their tired narrative that the Left is “grooming” kids -- the homophobic idea that somehow gay or trans people are turning recruiting children into the LGBTQ community. This dehumanizing trope actually made its way onto the California ballot in 1978. The attempted measure by the “Save Our Children” campaign pushed to ban gay teachers from working in public schools. The narrative today, which often centers around schools, is pushed by accounts like “Libs of Tiktok” which doxxes LBGT teachers and stokes this new/renewed moral panic.
What is mean to support a transgender child? Contrary to rumors, it doesn’t mean injecting a toddler with hormones! It means allowing that child to express themselves as they see fit, maybe that means allowing a child to use a different name or pronouns for a bit. Even in a reality where that “is a phase” the worst a parent is doing is demonstrating to their child that they’d love them whoever they are and helping a kid develop and refine their sense of self.
Conservatives like to induce panic about “irreversible” trans healthcare decisions harming children. Trans youth can go on puberty blockers to halt the production of estrogen or testosterone, if they change their mind, they can go off the blockers and have the decision be reversible. Meanwhile, in Texas, the Supreme Court has held that child welfare can continue to investigate parents and doctors who provide this gender-affirming care, which Governor Abbot has likened to child abuse.
There’s still much to learn about children who identify as transgender, but that learning starts with listening, not punishment.
