A dominant narrative has taken root, which holds that Asian Americans voters in San Francisco (who have experienced a rise in anti-asian hate crimes - as we’ve seen happen across the country since the beginning of COVID) were the major voting block which tipped the scales away from Boudin.
In reality, the lived experience of these Asian Americans is true - there has been a frightful rise in anti-Asian hate crimes. However the idea that this is the DA's fault is where the argument falls apart. People in the community gave Chesa a hard time because he described the murderous rage of a man who killed an elderly Asian man as “a temper tantrum,” but even if his words didn’t meet the moment exactly, that alleged murderer is still awaiting trial. He wasn’t let go like the fake news groupchats wanted folks to believe.
The driver of the anti-Boudin votes were conservative voters, and you can definitely find a large population of conservative Asian (specifically Chinese) voters in SF. What isn’t mentioned in this narrative is that the wealthiest portions of the city were the ones who voted overwhelmingly to recall Boudin - not the more working class neighborhoods. Take from that what you will.
