as posted by the channelRoe v Wade, the landmark ruling that gave women autonomy over their bodies, was just overturned by an extremist Supreme Court. This has been a long time coming, and although no one was surprised, especially after conservatives (likely) leaked the ruling in order to soften the blow when it finally came last Friday, it’s shocking nontheless.
The case SCOTUS heard, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, obliterated the federal right to privacy and essentially “allowed” the states to dictate to their citizens what human rights are. In the ruling, Clarence Thomas also explicitly mentions that the court is now setting its eyes on the right to contraceptives, gay marriage and gay sex, and even Brown V. Board of Education (which attempted to desegregate schools).
Thirteen states already have trigger laws, which criminalized abortion immediately after this ruling came down, while 9 others have bans that pre-date Roe and were never overturned or repealed, making them almost guaranteed to strip the right to an abortion from its entire populous, despite being passed before almost any of us were alive to protest it. While some injunctions have been granted in states like Louisiana and Utah, they are only temporary and can only hold back the draconian bans for so long.
