Besides Colombia being one of U.S. empire’s most important regional allies and client states in the so-called “War on Drugs,” it’s a hugely influential player that helps to shape the political environment in South America.
At the end of May, Colombians went to the polls all across the country to vote for their new President and Vice President. On the left were Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez, who broadly represented the left, and Rodolfo Hernández & Rodolfo Hernández, who represented the right wing and the status quo. Petro has promised no new oil and natural gas exploitation, and a general move away from the industries of resource exploitation that have historically dominated Colombia.
Despite these grand ambitions, threading the needle between the industries that currently drive the country’s economy and creating a less extractive and more environmentally conscious business climate will be no easy task. This is a project that cannot be completed by one president, but the ambition and the interests that he represents hopefully signify a Colombia that is willing to change and as invested in this process as Petro and his party are.
