Your period app is tracking you. Obviously, this is a core functionality of these services, because many folks want to have some idea of when their period may come, or they might use it to track their cycles for other medical reasons. Unfortunately, in our brave new world, this data might be used by states as a weapon against people who need to cross state borders to receive essential medical care.

In the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson, the recent Supreme Court case that obliterated the right to an abortion and the right to privacy, these period tracking apps are now a subject of concern for many, as it could provide states evidence that a person has received an abortion, or even had a miscarriage (which is also being criminalized since it can be almost impossible to tell the difference between the two).

There are a bevy of these apps on the Apple app store, and also on Google Play, and some have taken steps to ensure some measure of privacy. Let’s remember, though, these apps are a business, and they want to sell you their services, not push you towards a competitor. They’re going to say whatever they can to act like they care about your privacy, but in this terrifying new era, don’t take their word for it.
