YouTube Description
as posted by the channelIs the end of Boris Johnson’s tenure as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom the end of “populism” as MSNBC asks? We’d like to know what exactly MSNBC means by that, but first let’s take a look at this clip of Laura Ingraham and leading proponent of xenophobia Nigel Farage reacting to that characterization.
When asked, Farage explains that Boris just wasn’t “populist enough” because he decided to treat climate change as a real thing, didn’t start his own war on Britain’s queer community, and wasn’t firmly enough committed to the murder-suicide pact that is Brexit. Farage thinks that the reason he is gone is that he didn’t do enough to stand up to globalization, despite the fact that this complaint was nowhere to be seen among the laundry list of reasons why Johnson’s cabinet ministers resigned in protest over the past few weeks.
To get back to “populism,” what exactly is that supposed to mean? It should mean speaking to the working-class and doing what is popular. You know: abortion rights, labor rights, affordable housing, medicine and healthcare. But lately it seems to be a word falsely employed by the right-wing ruling class, trying to weaponize it against people of color, women and immigrants. Elitist liberals also use it to demonize non-racist populist leaders like Bernie Sanders. In the end, it doesn’t really describe anything real, because if it did, there’s really no way you could credibly use it to describe figures like Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders in the same breath.
