After years of inactivity and a slow erosion in the number of unionized jobs in the United States, it feels like stuff is finally starting to happen again. This month, two union drives caught our eye: One at the Medieval Times in New Jersey, another at strip clubs in Los Angeles.
Medieval Times in New Jersey collectively organized and was able to form a union. According to the Huffington Post: “The knights, squires, show cast and stablehands at the Lyndhurst location voted 26 to 11 in favor of joining the American Guild of Variety Artists following a ballot count Friday night… Medieval Times workers in New Jersey have been organizing to improve their pay and working conditions, with a particular focus on safety.” The election still needs to be certified by The National Labor Relations Board. But the serfs are rising up!
In L.A. Strippers at the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar are also organizing around safer working conditions and better pay. According to interviews conducted by Buzzfeed News, the employers at this club had “created unsafe working conditions — leaving them exposed to sexual assault and other health and safety hazards while limiting their access to security guards — and retaliated against them when the dancers raised concerns.” This comes in the wake of AB-5, a law that passed in 2019 that should’ve reclassified strippers as employees, not contractors, who are therefore entitled to benefits and unemployment insurance, however most clubs have been able to resist any changes to their business model.
